What is the Challenge?
Have you recently found it harder to read a book or to focus in prayer? Perhaps you’ve found it difficult to conduct a conversation, or simply to sustain your attention in a business meeting? Digital technology is transforming society, and we are all feeling it in our lives – in how we attend to the world, how we spend our time, and how we relate to each other – and to God. Although supposedly connecting us and making life easier, many of us feel that social media and smartphones have led to increased anxiety, distraction, and alienation. The evidence is overwhelming that digital technology presents special challenges to our spiritual well-being.
What is the Online Workshop About?
This workshop will explore the ways that digital technology challenges spiritual peace, and will provide encouragement and concrete advice about how to meet these challenges. Workshop leader Joshua Hochschild will discuss the kinds of questions we need to ask ourselves as we adopt new technologies, and the kinds of habits we need to cultivate in order to achieve and maintain peace of mind in the digital age.
Hochschild is a philosophy professor at Mount St. Mary’s University. He recently co-authored, with his friend Christopher Blum, the book, A Mind at Peace: Reclaiming an Ordered Soul in the Age of Distraction (Sophia Institute Press, 2017). Hochschild and Blum are both teachers, fathers, and Catholic converts; they collaborated on the book in a shared belief that classical wisdom and the Catholic spiritual tradition offer essential resources for contemporary challenges.
If you would like to watch the recorded online workshop, all you have to do is make a voluntary donation to Catholic-Link. Immediately afterward, you will receive detailed information explaining how to access the video. Any donation amount is acceptable! This money will go to covering the costs of our websites and to maintaining our evangelization projects such as the series: “A Minute with Pope Francis.” After registering, be on the look out for other great offers from Catholic-Link and our partner organizations!
